  • RAPT Network setup on Windows NT networks

The configuration of the Network Protocols and Services can be one of the following 2 possibilities. The first is much better and results in much quicker run times if it can be achieved.

1 "TCP/IP" protocol installed on all computers on which RAPT will be run and on the hlserver computer containing the dongle. The "NetBios Interface" Service must be installed on at least the hlserver computer if it is an NT computer and on any other NT computers running RAPT if desired and Client for Microsoft Networks must be installed on all Win95 computers. IPX/SPX Protocol cannot be installed in this case on the hlserver machine or any machine running RAPT. If Windows 95/98 computers are to be used to run RAPT across the network, the NetBEUI protocol must be installed on both the RAPT workstations and dongle server computer and must be set as the Default Protocol.

2 The network must be configured for the IPX/SPX Protocol in the Protocols tab of the Network icon on Control Panel. Other Protocols may be included also but RAPT will use IPX only as it is a 16bit program. The network must include the "SAP" Agent and the "Client Services for Netware" Agent in the Services tab of the Network icon on Control Panel for NT Networks and "Client for Microsoft Networks" for Win95 Networks. Use the "Add" button to install each of the agents.

For both above options;

Once these are installed, simply run the HLSadmin.exe program provided with RAPT. This will check for necessary protocols and list those available on the screen.

If the "Traffic Lights" icon is green, click on this icon to start the server service. Once started, the "Traffic Light" will change to red. Press this if you want to stop the server service and no longer use the RAPT dongle.

Once the service is started, Click on the left hand icon for adding a dongle (a picture of a dongle with a + sign). This will prompt you for a "Module Address" at which you input the RAPT address 29209. Once this is accepted, RAPT can be run from any machine on the network with all of the Agents/Protocols installed.

  • Installation of RAPT on computer systems using the Windows operating systems

RAPT can be run as a "DOS App" in all versions of the Windows operating system. There are, however, several peculiarities in the installation procedure. These must all be followed even if RAPT is being run from the DOS prompt. The only time they are not required is if the computer is booted as a DOS machine.

1 "Run from any directory" installation option:- Unless running a networked version of RAPT or wanting to reserve separate user areas for RAPT users on a non-networked system, say "no" to the "Run from any directory" option. Except in the cases mentioned, Windows achieves this automatically by setting up a shortcut to RAPT on the Desktop. Selecting this option in Windows will allow separate configuration directories to be set up for each user. Some sort of RAPT.bat file is then needed in each users workspace to change the RAPTCON setting to point to the configuration directory for each user.

2 Drivers:- After installing the main RAPT option for reinforced/prestressed/updates, it is necessary to install special windows drivers. This is done by carrying out the "Drivers & Network" installation. These drivers will then be installed in a sub-directory of RAPT. This sub-directory will also include a Readme.txt file, which explains the procedure for each version of windows. These drivers are required for external dongle access.

3 Graphics Printing:- For windows 3.#, printing of graphics is exactly as for DOS and presents no special problems. For printing of graphics from RAPT in all Operating Systems, the printing is handled by the DOS Graphics.com command (eg graphics laserjetii for all laserjet printers). Information on the printer name extension for the graphics command can be found in DOS help on Graphics. By default, this prints to LPT1. To modify this, use the DOS MODE command (Mode LPT2:). The mode command may not work in Windows95/NT and it may be necessary to print to LPT1. RAPT cannot do this internally. The settings in "Printer Settings" in the RAPT Master menu only control the text printing.

Windows NT4.0:- The following procedure will allow you to print graphics. The graphics files are loaded in the normal NT installation in the c:\winnt\system32 directory and there should be no problems if the following procedure is followed.

Step 1

Create a shortcut to RAPT.EXE on your desktop

Right click on this icon, choose properties

Choose the Misc tab

In the section Windows Shortcut keys uncheck the item PrtSc

Choose APPLY

Step 2

The next stage is to alter the DOS startup environment

Go to the system directory for NT eg c:\winnt\system32

Using a text editing program edit AUTOEXEC.NT

Add the following line at the bottom

graphics <your printer>, eg graphics laserjetii for all laserjet printers or graphics
graphics for all Epson and Canon printers

Use the same format for this command as used under DOS

Windows 95 A release:- The files graphics.com and graphics.pro are contained on the Windows 95CD at \other\oldmsdos\. Copy these files onto your computer in the \windows\command\ sub-directory.

Windows will probably give graphics.com a version number of 7.00. Use the DOS setver command to list the version numbers (setver |more) of the DOS files. If the version number for graphics.com is 7.00, it must be changed to 6.22 (setver graphics.com 6.22). This should be done from \windows\command directory rather than including a path name before setver. It is then necessary to reboot your computer to get the new version number accepted. If you have a Compaq computer, setver.exe may have been renamed setver.win. Rename it to setver.exe before carrying out the above.

Add the following line at the bottom of the autoexec.bat file

graphics <your printer>, eg graphics laserjetii for all laserjet printers or graphics
graphics for all Epson and Canon printers

Use the same format for this command as used under DOS

Windows 95 B release:- For some reason, the graphics files were not included on the CD. These can be downloaded from the downloads page on this website. These are only for use with Windows 95 A or B release, not for Windows NT or DOS for which they are always loaded onto the computer with the operating system in the normal installation.

It is necessary to load the setver.exe device into the config.sys file and reboot the computer before proceeding.
